5 Quick Tips for Taking Care of Teeth With Braces

Getting braces is an exciting step toward a straighter, healthier smile! However, those brackets and wires require some extra attention to prevent cavities, stains, and delays in your treatment. Good oral hygiene is essential during this time. Here are five important tips from Maple Park Dental to keep your smile healthy throughout your orthodontic journey.

1. Brush After Every Meal and Snack

It's easy for food particles to get caught around your braces. To prevent plaque buildup and white spots on your teeth, brush gently for at least two minutes after every time you eat. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, making sure to brush above, on, and below your brackets. If brushing isn't possible, vigorously rinse your mouth with water; alternatively, keep a travel toothbrush and toothpaste on hand for brushing when you're away from home.

2. Floss Daily—No Excuses

Flossing is crucial for removing debris that a toothbrush can't reach. While it takes more effort with braces, aim to floss at least once a day. Use a floss threader or a water flosser to maneuver the floss under the archwire. This removes plaque and reduces the risk of gum inflammation.

3. Avoid Damaging Foods

Protect your brackets and wires! Hard, crunchy, chewy, and sticky foods can cause your braces to break or come loose, leading to unscheduled repair visits and longer treatment. The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) advises steering clear of things like nuts, popcorn, hard candies, and taffy. Cut apples and other hard foods into small, bite-sized pieces.

4. Utilize Interproximal Brushes

Consider adding a few tools to your routine for extra cleaning. An interproximal brush (or "proxy brush") is perfect for reaching under the wires and between brackets. A member of the Maple Park Dental team can demonstrate the proper technique!

5. Keep Your Regular Appointments

Don't miss scheduled check-ups with your orthodontist and your regular cleanings with our hygienists. Your Maple Park Dental team provides professional care and thoroughly checks for any early signs of decay or gum disease.Ultimately, the effort you put into caring for your braces directly affects the speed and success of your treatment. By committing to diligent brushing, consistent flossing, and smart food choices, you'll protect your dental health and ensure a beautiful, appliance-free smile as quickly as possible. Don't hesitate to reach out to Maple Park Dental if you ever have questions or need a refresher on your cleaning techniques—we're here to support you every step of the way!
