Did you know that an athlete is 60 times more likely to suffer dental damage without a mouthguard? While we often focus on helmets and pads, protecting your teeth is crucial, especially in contact sports. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), participants of all ages, genders and skill levels are at risk of sustaining dental injuries in sporting activities, including organized and unorganized sports at both recreational and competitive levels. At Maple Park Dental, we want to help you stay in the game and keep your smile safe. Here are some key tips for preventing dental injuries during sports.
Invest in a High-Quality Mouthguard
A mouthguard is your first and most important line of defense. The ADA recommends a properly fitted mouthguard for sports like basketball, football, and hockey. A custom-fitted mouthguard made by a dentist provides the best protection, comfort, and fit. Unlike store-bought "boil-and-bite" options, a custom guard won't interfere with your speech or breathing, making you more likely to wear it. Talk to us at your next appointment about getting a personalized mouthguard.
Be Prepared for Emergencies
Accidents can still happen. If a tooth gets knocked out, acting quickly can save it! Gently hold the tooth by the crown (the top part, not the root), and if it's dirty, rinse it with water. Do not scrub it. Try to place the tooth back into its socket. If that's not possible, store it in a container of milk or saliva and get to our office or an emergency dental clinic immediately.
Maintain Regular Check-ups
Seeing your dentist regularly is not just about cleanings—it's also about prevention. During your visit, we can identify any pre-existing conditions that might make you more prone to injury and discuss the best protective equipment for your specific sport. If you have a mouthguard, be sure to bring it with you so we can check the fit and condition. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please contact us at Maple Park Dental. Stay ahead of the game and keep that smile shining bright!
